Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party: A Beautiful and Rare Silkscreened Poster from the 1964 Election

The MFDP was founded to challenge the legitimacy of the white-supremacist dominated Democratic Party in Mississippi. They sent a delegation to the Democratic National Convention and demanded to be seated, arguing that due process had not been followed in the election of the regular party's delegates. Acrimonious wrangling ensued at the convention under the eye of the media. At first it seemed the MFDP delegation might actually be seated. However, opposition from other Southern delegations was so vocal that Lyndon Johnson feared it would hurt the Democrats' chance at the polls in November. A compromise was offered allowing the MFDP two at-large seats, a gesture the group rejected out of hand, preferring to stand on principle. Accordingly, the regular delegates were seated. However, all but three of the Mississippi delegates walked out of the convention after Johnson was nominated, planning to throw their support to Barry Goldwater. The MFDP delegates poured onto the floor to take their chairs. But they were not recognized, and the next day the chairs had been removed from the convention floor. Throughout the days of the convention the MFDP continued to agitate and attract the attention of the nation. This attractive signed poster with the slogan "Stand up for the Freedom Democrats", being hand silkscreened, could have been produced on short order at the time of the convention, and depicts blacks and whites standing together. In beautiful condition, it is not only a highly decorative work of art, but also an important artifact from a significant episode in the history of the Civil Rights Movement. Excellent condition, 33" x 22". Nicely custom framed.
