John F. Kennedy: A Superb 1961-dated Pastel Portrait by Louis Lupas. One of several JFK portraits done by the renowned portrait artist from a live sitting in 1961. Lupas honed his skills doing artwork for the theater department of the New York Herald Tribune in the 1950s. Senator Barry Goldwater encouraged Lupas, whose work he admired, to move to Washington, DC to do portraits of prominent political figures and statesmen, for which he would become well known. While the precise details seem to have been lost, available biographies confirm that the newly-elected President Kennedy sat for Lupas, who then executed a series of pastel portraits which are widely considered among the finest artists' depictions of JFK from life. A similar pose in color sold for $43,000 in an October 31, 2004 Heritage auction, and another brought $40,625 in our November 23, 2010 Americana sale. This black and white example may well have been a study on which the more elaborate color versions were based, but it captures JFK in body and spirit as perhaps no other artist succeeded in doing. 18" x 23.5", elegantly custom-framed to 27" x 34".

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
