Description

Harry S Truman: 1948 Shenango "Upset Election" Shriners Presentation Plates. Measuring 10.75", these two china plates feature a grinning clown wearing a Shriner's fez at the center, complete with a black eye, bandaged head, and a cauliflower ear. An outer border depicts camels and robed figures, making their way from the bottom of the plate to the top, following a path to a building resembling the Taj Mahal. In the gold-colored printed text, the back reads, "To Harry S. Truman/ 'Man of the Year'/ whose head is bloody but unbowed/ with congratulations from/ Shenango/ for his magnificent/ One-Man Victory/ 1948." On one example, minor restoration is present at the back edge at four o'clock. In excellent condition, this plate is certainly eye-catching. The other example, in perfect condition, is identical except that the reverse includes the Shenango trademark of a Native-American pottery maker. The text on the first example is not as distinct as the other, perhaps indicating a second production run. The pair is conducive to displaying both front and back at the same time. President Truman was a Shriner, the most prominent one, and was photographed at Shriner Conventions proudly wearing his red fez. Great color and graphics!
