A magnificent and important artifact with wonderful display appeal.  63x45" deep blue, hand-crafted silk flag with detailed embroidered design.  On original hardwood 124" staff, which divides in two pieces at the brass joint for more convenient handling. The staff is surmounted by a 6" gilt eagle finial.

There were only two such large-size Presidential flags: one was behind the president's desk in the oval office, and the other stood flanking the fireplace in the Cabinet Room (see image of original Harris and Ewing 8x10" photo of FDR's cabinet room, which accompanies this lot).

The flag was obtained by Raleigh Amyx in 1986 from the grandson of William D. Simmons, who had served FDR as a Secret Service Agent, and then functioned as Doorkeeper and Chief Receptionist to the president's office for Roosevelt, and other presidents thereafter until his retirement in 1961. The flag is accompanied by a handwritten letter of provenance from the grandson, Robby Simmons, who certifies that the flag is from the FDR White House, and that (based on what his grandfather had told him), "I believe it to be the personal flag of the President."

It is certain that the flag is not later than FDR, as Truman had the Presidential Seal and flag re-designed in 1945, having the eagle's head turned so it faced the olive branch of peace, in his right talons, rather than the arrows of war in his left.

The flag is in fine overall display condition, with strong, vibrant color.  The natural silk material used to form the background is somewhat deteriorated, which is not surprising, as silk is a very perishable fabric. Accordingly, there are various fine vertical separations in the cloth.  They are not noticeable when the flag is displayed flat, but it certainly would be worthwhile to have them stabilized by a good professional textile conservator, and to provide some treatment to prevent further deterioration.  However, we emphasize that the flag is eminently displayable as it is.

A relic of the highest status from one of the most important American presidents. Please note: Due to the size and/or weight of this lot, additional shipping costs may apply.
