    The first whistle-stop campaign

Eugene V. Debs: TLS Red Special Presentation. Handsome presentation of three items issued in the presidential election of 1908. It includes a Eugene Debs Typed Letter Signed on Socialist Party letterhead with jugate portraits of Debs & Hanford, "en route to Joliet, Ills, Oct. 29th 1908". The letter was written aboard "The Red Special", a train used to transport Debs and his entourage to campaign stops across the country... the first "whistle-stop" campaign in U. S. political history. Debs acknowledges the receipt of a book and apologizes for a poor speech the night before. "I was not in physical condition to do justice to myself last evening as the campaign has been a continuous one for over two months and its demands have been very exacting both day and night. Perhaps on some future occasion I may be able to again address your people and put the fire of my soul into my call." Attractively framed together with the original "Socialist Red Special" transmittal envelope and a campaign postcard from that same election.
