Abraham Lincoln Massive Bronze-Finish Bust; A Unique Image. Perhaps the largest Lincoln metal bust we have ever encountered, measuring 53" in height, and 28" in width at the shoulders! Lincoln is shown wearing a Roman-style toga, a common convention among sculptors of the day when depicting statesmen. IT is made of zinc with an applied bronze finish that appears to be original. Minor wear to the finish, particularly around the bottom of the pedestal base, but overall in excellent condition for display. The bust is unsigned and bears no maker's name, so it is impossible to date precisely. But it is of a style popular during the last years of the War. Possibly it may have been made during the mourning period after Lincoln's assassination, but most memorial pieces bear birth and death dates or some sentiment identifying them as memorial in nature. Although it is in typical style, we cannot recall seeing a version of this exact Lincoln sculpture previously. Given the lack of markings and the distinctiveness of the image, it may well be a one-of-a-kind item, possibly made for a specific location or even a manufacturer's trial which was never commercially produced. In any case, one of the most power and arresting Lincoln sculptures we have seen.
For many years this bust was the focal point in the reception area of the Beistle Corporation in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, Henry Luhrs' family company. To many members of the family and others who knew his collection, it became the collection's most familiar symbol. We feel sure it will "rule the room" wherever its new owner chooses to display it.
