    Description

[Stephen A. Douglas]: Folk-Art Campaign Banner from Connecticut.
47.5" x 46" light canvas banner with patriotic eagle holding riband that reads "North South", inscribed "North-Stamford Democratic Union Club." Colors include red, blue, black, green and yellow. Silk rosettes attached to top two corners. Scalloped silk borders or trim. Attached to wooden rods at top & bottom (partially detached at top). Some loss to trim, but generally in excellent condition. We date this to the 1856-1864 period, but feel it is most likely a Buchanan or Douglas piece. It briefly hung in a Greenwich, Connecticut "watering hole" (donated by a local patron), but came on the market after the restaurant ceased operation.
