    Description

[Abraham Lincoln]: John Wilkes Booth Stage Costume. Very little remains of the personal effects of Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth. Obviously, the little that existed was either destroyed in fits of anger or retained surreptiously by family members or admirers. We offer a leather jerkin that Booth used in various stage roles. It measures 28" tall and 17" wide and is lined with linen. There are five single-piece brass buttons with six-pointed stars still attached. It is in very good condition with a few splits and tears, as to be expected. Stylistically, it would have been appropriate for any number of roles Booth specialized in, be they historical dramas or Shakespeare. It was acquired by Dr. John Lattimer from Charles Hamilton Auctions a good number of years ago. A cover letter from Hamilton accompanies the lot along with the "card authenticating the jacket of John Wilkes Booth..." The card, clearly written in the 19th century, reads: "This leather 'Hawbuck' jacket was worn in several characters by John Wilkes Booth and came into my possession after his death and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. McKee Rankin." In handling this costume, one can't help thinking of the greatest role Booth undertook... the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. It was but a brief, walk-on role, but it brought him infamy.
