    Description

Zouave Colonel Dewitt C. Baxter Carte de Visite.
2.5" x 4.25", with a McAllister & Brother, Philadelphia imprint on verso. A standing portrait of Colonel Baxter, dressed in his full Zouave uniform and holding his saber. Baxter commanded the 72nd Pennsylvania Infantry, which became known as "Baxter's Fire Zouaves" because the majority of volunteers were recruited from various firehouses around Philadelphia. The unit became known for their precise drilling, and Baxter even published an illustrated maneuvers book, which highlighted his proficiency in such drills. He led the regiment at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg (where he was wounded), and the Wilderness (where he was severely wounded, shot through the lungs). Baxter survived the war, however, and went on to work as a naval officer at the Custom House. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: Very good condition, with minimal wear at the corners and minor edge soiling.
