DescriptionWilliam N. Green, Jr. Signed Carte de Visite. 2.5" x 4", a standing portrait in uniform, with a Johnson Williams, New York backstamp on verso. Signed on verso: "W.N. Green, Jr. Lt. Col. 173d N.Y.S.V. N.Y. City June 27th 63."
William Green was only eighteen years old when he enlisted in the 25th Massachusetts Infantry on September 16, 1861. He served for six months before being promoted to second lieutenant and receiving a transfer to the 102nd New York Infantry. He was captured at the Battle of Cedar Mountain and spent the next forty-six days in Libby Prison. After Green was exchanged, he returned to active duty and received a promotion and transfer on June 13, 1863. Now a lieutenant colonel, he was placed on the field staff of the 173rd New York Infantry serving duty in Louisiana. On April 9, 1864, he was wounded at Pleasant Hill, Louisiana, and had his left arm amputated. He lived another five weeks before dying of his wounds in New Orleans at the age of twenty-one.
