    Description

Depicts the railroad's conquest of the Rocky Mountains

William Henry Jackson, Photographer: Mammoth Plate Albumen Train Photo "Veta Pass", 1881. Image size 20.75" x 16.25" on original 27.75" x 21.75" mount. Marked in the negative "1017. Veta Pass" at lower left and "W. H. Jackson & Co Phot. Denver" at lower right. A dramatic and popular image of a double-headed Denver & Rio Grande Railroad passenger train making its way down to the town of La Veta from Dump Mountain in the Sangre de Cristos of south central Colorado. When built in 1877, this route reached the highest elevation via the steepest grades of any railroad in North America; La Veta Pass is at 9413 feet of elevation. It was railroads such as this that aided in the phenomenal growth of Colorado during the 1870s and 1880s. Jackson took this commissioned photo shortly after he left the Hayden Surveys and established his own photography studio in Denver. Wonderful contrast and detail, excellent condition overall with minor dampstaining in the lower border of the mat. Easily remedied by a paper restorer.
