    William F. Smith Signed Carte de Visite. 2.5" x 4", chest up portrait of Smith in his Union uniform, with a Brady, New York backstamp on verso. Signed by Smith on verso: "To Gov Fairbanks with the kindest regards of Wm F. Smith Major Genl."

    William Farrar Smith (1824-1903), also known as "Baldy" Smith is remembered for his bravery at the Seven Days Battles and Antietam. He fought at the Peninsula, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Chattanooga, serving as Chief Engineer of the Department of the Cumberland. His career was unfortunately marred by acrimonious disputes with Ben Butler and George Meade.

    Condition: Bumped corners. Light uneven toning throughout. There are a few pencil notations on verso.
