William F. Cody and Sitting Bull: A Monumental 11" x 14" D. F. Barry Print of this Famous Photo. One of the most iconic of Western photographs, it was taken in August 1885 in the Montreal studios of William F. Notman while the two were in Canada for a performance of Buffalo Bill's Wild West. Less than a decade after Little Bighorn, the two former foes had "buried the hatchet" and the former Sioux leader had become one of the principal draws of Cody's extravaganza.

While the original image is credited to Notman's studio, it was copyrighted a decade later by D. F. Barry, who popularized it. This image is typically found in cabinet photo form; we have never before encountered it in this massive size. The rich, sepia-tone print is mounted on the full original Barry board. His imprint is found both on the bottom of the photo itself and in the lower right-hand corner of the mount. Barry's original label is also found on the back of the mount.

There is a tiny amount of trivial edge wear on the mount, noted only for strictest accuracy, but overall condition of both photo and mount is magnificent, and the image is a deep, rich sepia exhibiting no fading. A very special photo that would make a perfect companion piece to display with the adjacent contract.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
