    William Birney (1819-1907) was an abolitionist and joined the Union Army shortly after the start of the war. He became captain in the 1st New Jersey Infantry Regiment and saw action at the First Battle of Bull Run, Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. In 1863 he was commissioned brigadier general and commanded the 22nd U.S. Colored Troops. After the war, President Johnson nominated Birney to be appointed brevet major general.

    Condition: Clipped corners. Light uneven toning. Additional light wear to corners.
