    W. Eugene Smith Signed Silver Gelatin Photo Print entitled "Africa- Leprosy Patient" in pencil by Smith to the left of his signature on the mount beneath the photo. Smith was one of the greatest of all photojournalists. He essentially invented and certainly perfected the photo essay while working for Life magazine. One of his greatest efforts, and the one that caused him to sever ties with Life over issues of layout, was on Dr. Albert Schweitzer. Smith traveled to Africa and documented Schweitzer's work with the leper colony in Lambarene (now Gabon). This is one of the photos taken on that trip and it's a powerful image - a black leper wearing a hat, facing away from the camera, with a religious medal turned around to lay across his back in stark contrast to the dark tones of the photo. It is 8" x 5.5" and mounted to a 14" x 11" board with the photographer's credit & copyright stamp on the verso. Excellent condition.
