    Description

Varina Davis Carte de Visite Signed "Affectionately your friend V. Davis." 2.5" x 4", with a Norman, Montreal imprint on verso. Signed on the mount below the albumen. A portrait of a young Varina, circa 1849, made just a few years after marrying Jefferson Davis. The original portrait was done by John Wood Dodge and is now owned by the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery. When Varina met Davis, he was a 35-year-old widower, his first wife having died of malaria in 1835. The couple soon became engaged and married on February 26, 1845. Upon becoming First Lady of the Confederacy, Varina was conflicted about the war because although she supported slavery, she also had family in the North and had been educated in Philadelphia. After the war's end, she worked to free her husband from prison and later completed and published his autobiography after his death. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: There is a spot of soiling to the right of Mrs. Davis' head. Minor uneven toning throughout. The corners are slightly worn.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
