Union Spy Pauline Cushman Carte de Visite. 2.5" x 4", with an E. & H.T. Anthony, New York imprint on verso. A standing portrait of the famed female spy, dressed in full military uniform, with a saber at her side. A description on the back of the card reads, "MISS MAJOR PAULINE CUSHMAN, The Union Spy and Scout, who was captured and sentenced to death as a Federal Spy, and was rescued at Shelbyville by the Union Army under Gen. Rosecrans." Through her talent as an actress, Cushman was able to ingratiate herself with Confederate authorities, and was able to smuggle out multiple battle plans to the Union army. She was eventually captured twice in 1864 and was tried as a spy and sentenced to be hanged. However, she was saved by the timely intervention of Federal troops and was commissioned a major in the Union army by Abraham Lincoln. Her major uniform can be seen proudly worn in this portrait. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: Toning throughout, with wear at the corners. Some light spotting at the top left corner. Two small stamp imprints at the lower two corners of the albumen. Minor soiling on verso, along with some writing in pencil. Overall good.
