    Description

Union Sergeant Boston Corbett: Matthew Brady Carte de Visite "Sergt. Boston Corbett, 16th N.Y. Cavalry, Who Shot J. W. Booth". Size is 2.25" x 4". A handsome Mathew Brady image of Boston Corbett and his commanding officer Captain Edward P. Doherty. On April 26, 1865, Sergeant Boston Corbett of the 16th New York Cavalry raised his Colt revolver to shoot John Wilkes Booth. Lincoln's infamous assassin was cornered in a burning tobacco barn on the Virginia farm of Richard Garrett. Ignoring orders to take Booth alive, the over-zealous Corbett fatally wounded the fugitive with the justification that "God Almighty directed me." This photo shows Corbett standing, in uniform facing the commanding officer of the 16th New York Cavalry. Corbett's holstered revolver and sword are well displayed. The Brady imprint appears on the recto and verso, with a registered date of 1865. Modest foxing appears on the recto and verso with a faint horizontal crease running at the midpoint of the image. Several versions of Corbett's CDV exist, this version not encountered as often. Very good condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
