    Description

Union Naval Captain Percival Drayton Carte de Visite Signed Twice. 2.5" x 4", with a Brady's, New York imprint on verso. Signed "P. Drayton" at the lower margin and "P. Drayton Captain US Navy" on verso. A seated portrait of the career naval officer dressed in full uniform with his saber, and with his hat resting in his lap. Percival Drayton (1812-1865) was a Union naval officer whose older brother, Thomas, became a general in the Confederate Army. Drayton commanded the gunboat Pocahontas at the beginning of the war, and aided in the capture of Port Royal, SC. In September 1862, he served as commander of the ironclad Passaic, which participated in the spring of 1863 attacks on Forts McAllister and Sumter. By the following year, he was charged with commanding the Hartford at the Battle of Mobile Bay. Tragically, he died shortly after the war at the age of 52. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: Light edge toning and soiling. A revenue stamp on verso has been almost entirely removed, with only a small amount of residue remaining. Else good.
