    Union Major General William "Bull" Nelson, Murdered by a Fellow Officer, Carte de Visite and Clipped Signature. Includes: (1) A handsome CDV of Nelson in uniform, standing. From a Brady photographic negative published by E. Anthony, New York. Contemporary caption, in ink, at the lower edge. Some toning along the edges and minor mounting remnants on the verso, else very good condition. (2) Clipped signature, 5.75" x 1.75", signed "W. Nelson / Brig Genl". Bright, bold and in fine condition. William Nelson (1824-1862) served in the navy for 21 years prior to assuming an army command. In addition to service in the Mexican-American War, Nelson was present at several early battles in the Civil War including Shiloh and the siege of Corinth. His promising career was cut short when he was murdered by a subordinate officer at the Galt House in Louisville, Kentucky, September 29, 1862.
