    Description

Union Major General Hiram Gregory Berry: Two Cartes de Visite and Wartime Dated Documents. Including: (1) CDV bust portrait, in uniform, E. & H. T. Anthony, New York studio mark on the verso, from a Brady negative, approximately 2.5" x 4", in excellent condition. (2) CDV portrait, in uniform, approximately 2.5" x 4" with a J. Cremer & Company, Philadelphia studio mark on the verso. Modest foxing, corners rounded, else very good condition. (3) Autograph Letter Signed "H. G. Berry / Brig. Genl Vols". One page, 8" x 12.5", "Camp near Falmouth VA", December 29, 1862, to Col. Fred Pierson of the 1st NY Volunteers. The general commends Col. Pierson on the improvement of the 1st New York. He writes, in part: "When the 1st New York joined my brigade at Fair Oaks, its discipline was very poor. The habits of many of its officers were such as to demoralize to a good degree the entire regiment. I almost despaired of ever making it a perfectly reliable organization. I am happy to say that through your exertions, many worthless officers have been got rid of; the regiment is now a model of discipline...". A bit of toning to the paper, old smoothed fold creases with a split in one fold crease, else a legible letter in very good condition. (4) Document signed "H. G. Berry / Brig Genl Vols.", one page, 8" x 6.75", "Camp below Fredericksburg", December 14, 1862. General Berry lauds the performance of the 3rd Michigan and 1st New York Vols., writing in part: "They were not actively engaged, but by their steady bearing and devotion to duty have again won my admiration. The conduct of these two Regiments could not be bettered." The document bears traces of old fold creases and some modest age toning, otherwise it is fine, wartime example. Hiram Berry (1824-1863) was killed by a sharpshooter at the battle of Chancellorsville, May 3, 1863.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
