    Description

Union Major General George Gordon Meade: Alexander Gardner Carte de Visite Signed "Geo. G. Meade / Maj. Genl U.S.A.". Approximately 2.5" x 4" with an Alexander Gardner backmark, published by Philp & Solomons, Washington, D.C. The general poses seated in full uniform, his kepi resting on his lap. Boldly and clearly signed at the lower edge of the mount. George Meade (1815-1872) was an 1835 graduate of West Point and served with distinction in the Second Seminole War, Mexican-American War and most notably in the Civil War. He served in many of the major battles of the war, probably best known for his defeat of Lee at Gettysburg. Except for some trivial age toning, this fantastic image is in fine condition.
