    Description

"Thank God this cruel war is at an end"

Union General Mortimer D. Leggett Autograph Letter Signed with Carte de Visite. The ALS is one page from Raleigh, North Carolina, on April 20, 1865, on letterhead reading "Head Quarters 3d Division 17th Army Corps, Army of the Tennessee," to C. L. Pascal of Philadelphia. Leggett, a veteran of the battles of Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Corinth, and Vicksburg writes only days after General Lee surrendered his Confederate army, "Thank God this cruel war is at an end. Republican institutions vindicated, our glorious flag respected, and our beloved country, purified by fire, stronger & better than ever before. Glory to God!" The letter is lined and has been backed with paper board. The CDV (2.5" x 4") features an upper body portrait of Leggett in uniform. Backstamped by photographers Barr & Young of Memphis. Minor soiling.
