    Two Medal of Honor Winners

Union Cartes-de-Visite: Joseph Hooker, Ethan Allen Hitchcock, William Babcock Hazen, Oliver Otis Howard, Francis Jay Herron and Samuel Peter Heintzelman. Six (6) cartes including Joseph Hooker (1814-1879) by Barnard; an unmarked Ethan Allen Hitchcock (1798-1870); William Babcock Hazen (1830-1887) by Brady's National Portrait Gallery, Washington, D.C.; Oliver Otis Howard (1830-1909); Francis Jay Herron (1837-1902); and Samuel Peter Heintzelman (1805-1880). The cartes of Howard, Herron, and Heintzelman are by Anthony, New York, from negatives from Brady's National Portrait Gallery. Hazen led Ohio troops and fought with distinction at Shiloh, Stone's River, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge and the March to the Sea. He is credited with erecting the first Civil War monument in 1863. Heintzelman was a 40-year army veteran who was personally courageous, but had serious shortcomings as a corps commander. Herron lead Iowa troops and performed admirably at Pea Ridge (awarded the M.O.H. 30 years after the fact) and Prairie Grove. The elderly Hitchcock wisely rejected offers of field command and instead performed efficiently as Commissioner for Prisoner Exchanges. Howard won the M.O.H. for his heroic actions at Seven Pines. He was blamed for the defeat at Chancellorsville, but acquitted himself well at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg (earning a "Thanks of Congress" citation) and the Atlanta Campaign. He founded Howard University and Lincoln Memorial University at Harrogate, Tennessee. From the collection of Dr. Michael Krane.
