Union Cartes-de-Visite: John Buford, Don Carlos Buell and William Thomas Harbaugh Brooks. Four (4) cartes including two (2) of John Buford (1826-1863), one of his head and shoulders, by R. W. Addis, Washington, D.C.; and a three-quarter length sitting Buford by E & H.T. Anthony from a negative from Brady's National Portrait Gallery; Don Carlos Buell (1818-1898) by Hoag & Quick's Art Palace, Cincinnati; William Thomas Harbaugh Brooks (1821-1870) by McClees Gallery, Washington, D.C.; and Franklin Buchanan (1800-1874) by Anthony, New York. Buford was a talented cavalry commander whose scouting activities provided valuable information. His men captured J. E. B. Stuart's famed plumed hat and a copy of Lee's orders to mass the Army of Northern Virginia against Pope. His delaying tactics against Confederates at Gettysburg enabled Federal troops to occupy a key position southeast of the town that Buford had previously scouted. He died of typhoid fever on December 16, 1863. Buell commanded the Department of the Ohio and performed admirably at Shiloh and, to a certain extent, at Perryville, but his overly cautious approach resulted in his dismissal. Brooks led Vermont troops at Williamsburg, Seven Days, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. Burnside tried blaming him for the fiasco at Fredericksburg... a charge which hung over him until he resigned on July 14, 1864. From the collection of Dr. Michael Krane.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
