    Medal of Honor Winner

Union Cartes-de-Visite: Christopher Columbus Augur, Edward Dickinson Baker, Absalom Baird, Lewis Golding Arnold, Robert Anderson, Nathaniel P. Banks, William Woods Averell and Alexander Sandor Asboth. Eight (8) cartes including an unmarked Christopher Columbus Augur (1821-1898); Edward Dickinson Baker (1811-1861) by Charles D. Fredricks & Company, New York; Absalom Baird (1824-1905) by McClees Gallery, Washington, D.C (trimmed along right side); Lewis Golding Arnold (1817-1871) by William Hallett Savage, Stoneham, Massachusetts; Robert Anderson (1805-1871 by J. Gurney & Son, New York; full-standing Nathaniel P. Banks (1816-1894); William Woods Averell (1832-1900); and Alexander Sandor Asboth (1811-1868). The Banks, Averell, and Asboth cartes are by Anthony, New York. The Banks carte is from a negative from Brady's National Portrait Gallery. Augur, Commandant of West Point in 1861, was severely wounded at Cedar Mountain and fought under Banks at Port Hudson. Baker. a friend of Lincoln, was a better politician than soldier who died unnecessarily at the Battle of Ball's Bluff. Baird was an accomplished division commander who fought at Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, the Atlanta Campaign and Jonesborough where he earned the M.O.H. for leading the brigade that broke the Confederate position. Averell was a capable, though irritable, cavalry commander who fought at Peninsula, Antietam, Fredericksburg and, most famously, at Kelly's Ford, the Union cavalry's first large-scale victory over its Confederate counterpart. Asboth, a Hungarian expatriate, was wounded at Pea Ridge and Marianna, Florida. From the collection of Dr. Michael Krane.
