    KIA Gettysburg

Union Carte-de-Visite: Elon John Farnsworth. CDV of Farnsworth (1837-1863) by Whitehurst Gallery, Washington, D.C. This is a from-life image, not copied from a print or engraving. Farnsworth was forage master for Albert Sidney Johnston's Utah Expedition. At the start of the Civil War, he joined the 8th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry. He rose to company commander and was present for more than 40 battles or skirmishes which his regiment participated in through mid-1863. He joined the staff of General Pleasonton, commanding a cavalry division in the Army of the Potomac. He did some wire-pulling and got a promotion for Pleasonton and was himself rewarded with a promotion as Brigadier General of Volunteers. At the outset of the Gettysburg campaign, Farnsworth's men were attacked and nearly routed by troopers of J. E. B. Stuart. Three days later, right after Pickett's Charge, he was ordered by General Kilpatrick to lead a suicidal diversionary assault upon Confederate infantry and artillery positioned on high ground behind a stone wall. Farnsworth protested but, when his courage was questioned, he complied with the order, losing a quarter of his command in the process. Unharmed after a circuitous ride among the enemy, he was subsequently cut down and killed when retracing his path. From the collection of Dr. Michael Krane.
