    Description

General Lytle is posed standing, in uniform with sword at his side. Contemporary ink identification at the lower edge. Mount and image dark with age, top edge slightly trimmed, else very good. William Lytle (1826-1863) was an Ohio politician and renowned poet. Lytle was mortally wounded at the Battle of Chickamauga while leading a counterattack on horseback. Once his identity was known, respectful Confederates placed a guard around his body, and many recited his poetry over their evening campfires. The hill where he died is now known as "Lytle Hill" in the Chickamauga National Military Park.
