    Description

Twenty Cartes de Visite of Various Abraham Lincoln Themes. This lot can be broken up into four sections: portraits, group collages, family, and memorial depictions. The portrait group consists of five engravings from original portraits. (2 - #O-91; 1 - #O-55; 2 - #O-9 (beard added)). All are in fine or better condition; several have gorgeous embossed borders; most have pencil notations on verso; light toning on most.

The group collages are three in number and two feature Lincoln and his cabinet, and one is of Lincoln and the Union generals. All in fine or better condition; pencil notations on verso; one exhibits trimmed corners; overall toning and fading on all three.

The family group contains four CDVs, three engravings, and one photo. The three engravings are Carpenter's 1866 rendition of the original "Lincoln and Tad" photograph (#O-93a), which feature the whole Lincoln family. The original photo is simply of Lincoln and Tad as originally appeared when it was taken by A. Berger. All are in fine or better condition; pencil notations on verso of one; light toning on all; proprietary stamp on verso of the photographic example.

The final group is the largest and most diverse; eight images, all artistic engravings. The subject of all eight is the mourning and memory of the "Great Emancipator". The most recognizable are three examples of the "Apotheosis of Lincoln" painted by J. Ferris. It pictures Lincoln and Washington in an awkward embrace as Lincoln ascends to heaven. Also of note is an example of one of the varieties of Lincoln's deathbed engravings. The rest of the items are Columbia mourning her fallen comrade and several memorials pieces. All are in fine or better condition; light overall toning; some exhibit trimmed corners; several with pencil notations on verso.
