    Description

Train Robber Sam Bass: McGregor, Texas CDV Album. 5" x 6" leather album with steel horseshoe insert on cover. It houses 30 cartes-de-visite and tintypes. The album was assembled by a young girl and includes pictures of family members, school mates and a variety of boyfriends ("beaus"). All are identified in pencil below the images. Various locales in Texas are mentioned (Hempstead, Chappell Hill, Bonham, Wheelock and Sherman). Most noteworthy is an unmarked carte identified as "Sam Bass one of my best friends. McGregor Texas." Another one shows "Uncle Brown Colonel J. M. Brown". Sam Bass (1851-1878) was a stagecoach and train robber. His most spectacular heist was the Union Pacific Gold Train which netted him and his partner $60,000 on September 18, 1877. He was "set-up" and killed in a shootout with Texas Rangers in Round Rock, Texas on July 21, 1878. He is remembered in McGregor as a street ("Sam Bass Road") was named in his honor. James Moreau Brown (1821-1895) was the President of the Galveston, Houston and Henderson Railroad. He was a purchasing agent for the Confederate States in Mexico and assisted in the recapture of Galveston during the Civil War. We believe the Bass photo is a new discovery and unpublished.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
