Description

Superb Quarter Plate Tintype of a Mounted Nez Perce or Palouse Indian. Circa mid-1870s. This marvelous image depicts a mounted warrior sitting on a saddle which, along with the martingale, has typical heavily beaded decoration. In his hand he holds a spontoon tomahawk, and he wears a typical hat with an eagle feather, which the photographer has tinted red. His jacket is made of a blanket and is adorned with ermine pelts. Condition is as great as the subject matter, making this one of the finest early Native American photos we have handled.

According to the source from whom our consignor purchased it, this image was part of a large collection assembled on the Nez Perce reservation. It probably pre-dates Little Big Horn, after which tension between the Nez Perce and settlers escalated, ultimately leading to the campaign against Chief Joseph in 1877.

The tintype is housed in a leatherette case with separated lid, and measures 3" x 4".
