Superb Mint Abraham Lincoln Tintype in Civil War Era Thermoplastic Case. Tintype and case are in spectacular near mint to mint condition. "Constitution and Union" on banner on the gilt brass mat, below his portrait. The mat also features flags, drum, and cannon.

It is impossible to know whether this was produced as an 1864 campaign item or a patriotic keepsake, but it dates no earlier than 1864 because of the portrait. The image itself is the same as the example we offered in our November 2004 auction (#609 Lot 27329), but a little smaller (that example, which also had a patriotic motif on the exterior of the case, sold for $3910). In this case, the pristine tintype is even more pristine than the example in the above-mentioned sale. The tintype itself measures 1.5" x 2", while the case (open as shown) is 5" x 2.875", a magnificent Lincoln tintype.
