    Description

Sixth Plate Tintype of Black Chickasaw Indian Sheriff, ca. 1860s-1870s. "This list (Dawes Commission) of Black Chickasaws surnames represent the names of the freedmen who were adopted through the Dawes Commission, between 1898 and 1916. Note that many of these names appear in other Indian nation lists, and their appearance here does not absolute provide proof of Black Indian Ancestry. In addition to these items, it is recommended that the researcher obtain as much oral history as possible on the family, and then locate the Dawes records on the family, including the names of ancestors on the Enrollment Cards and other pertinent records." Oberton (Keel) is noted on this list.

This rare sixth-plate tintype of a Black Chickasaw reads on verso, in period ink, in part: "Oberton Keel, Sheriff of Pickens County (Oklahoma) Chickasaw Nation, 2 miles from Guthrie." Measures approximately 3.5" x 4".

    Condition:
Very good-fine, has minor rust on edges.
