    Description

Quarter Plate Tintype of a Union Drummer Boy. A full-length portrait, measuring 2.5" x 3.5" (sight), showing an unidentified Union drummer boy in a studio setting, dressed in a short jacket, trousers and forage cap. He is holding a large drum against his left side and drum sticks in his right hand. Red and gold hand tinted. This very image was published on page 9 in the 1995 Military Images magazine, Vol. XVI, No. 4, and the boy is identified there as a member of the 72nd Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, also known as "Baxter's Fire Zouaves". The famed regiment is best known for having heroically defended "The Angle" near the copse of trees at the focal point of "Pickett's Charge" on the third and final day of the Battle of Gettysburg. The tintype is housed in a thermoplastic case, measuring 4" x 4.75", decorated with patriotic military insignia. The case was manufactured by Littlefield, Parsons & Co.

Those who were too young to enlist as regular soldiers often filled the position of drummer boy, but these young boys still played a crucial part in the army. Drums were used as a method of communication on the battlefield, and drummers had to learn dozens of drum calls. In addition to these duties, drummer boys were often tasked with aiding the medical staff in field hospitals. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection.

Condition: The tintype is slightly dark, with minor imperfections, but it is a clear image. The case has some chipping and cracks at the edges. Overall good.
