Fantastic Collection of Gem Size Tintypes of the Prominent Griswold Family of Connecticut, Including Soldier Three Civil War Soldiers Who Served in the 15th Connecticut Infantry.
This particular branch of the Griswold clan traces their roots back to Matthew Griswold and Roger Griswold who were governors of Connecticut, Matthew from 1784-86, and Roger from 1811-12. This lot features 23 gem size tintypes with gilt mats, mounted to a 9 ΒΌ x 7-inch backing board, most captioned in ink of various Griswold family members and in some cases, extended family. Among the family members were three men who served in the Connecticut 15th Infantry Regiment. Charles Griswold was in Company E and ultimately was promoted to captain, his image depicts him in his officer's uniform. Joel Griswold was also in Company E, he was captured at Kinston, North Carolina in March, 1865 but paroled shortly after. He is pictured in uniform. Theodore Davis, who is pictured wearing civilian clothing, was served in Company B, of the 15th, he was taken prisoner the same time as Joel but pardoned later in April, 1865.

Condition: Very good. All images are sharp, clear and typically bright. Two of the children's images have some cracking in the emulsion. One example is lacking from the group. The backing board is browned and there are areas of damp staining along margins.
