[Texas Rangers]. Captain Junius "June" Peak Tintype, circa 1878. 2" x 3" (sight). June Peak holds his Winchester 1873 lever-action rifle by his left side, and wears a cavalry-draw style two Colt revolvers on holstered bullet belts. This is one of the best portraits of a Ranger captain in Ranger dress.

This image was made while Peak was serving as Special Ranger captain in pursuit of Texas outlaw Sam Bass. Governor Richard Coke commissioned Peak a second lieutenant in Company "B" of the Frontier Battalion and charged him with raising a special detachment of Rangers to track down the outlaw and his gang. Peak became captain of the company on June 1, 1878. With the aid of local posses, he and his men pursued Bass for several months, driving him from North Texas towards his ultimate capture and death at Round Rock. Afterward, Peak's company was transferred to West Texas and served in the San Angelo area fighting Indians and mapping waterholes. This tintype is framed to an overall size of 4" x 5". A half-circle marking exists on the tintype, but in no way detracts of a magnificent image of the heavily armed Ranger captain.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
