    Description

Thomas Ustick Walter. Half Plate Daguerreotype of Ustick Family, Including Black Servant. A fine quality daguerreotype of Thomas Ustick Walter and his family with the family's black servant, circa 1850. Born in Philadelphia, Walter (1804-1887) was the leading American architect of his time. He was appointed the fourth architect of the U.S. Capitol building by President Millard Fillmore and served in that capacity from 1851 to 1865, completing the Senate and House wings of the capitol (1851-1859) and the building's majestic dome during Abraham Lincoln's presidency. He was one of the founders and second president of the American Institute of Architects.

Walter was twice married; he married Mary Ann Hancocks in 1824 and together they had eleven children. Mary Ann Walter died in 1847 after giving birth to their eleventh child. In 1848, Walter married Amanda Gardiner and together they had two children. Amanda Gardiner Walter (1821-1892) helped Walter raise his six children from his previous marriage. The young child on Walter's lap is probably Irene Walter, the first child he had with Amanda Walter. Irene was born in 1849. What is unusual about this photograph and which makes it extremely rare is the presence of a black servant, perhaps a nursemaid. She reportedly came to the family with Walter's second wife Amanda. One assumes that since both Walter and his second wife were from the free state of Pennsylvania, the black servant was a free woman. This large and historically important image is in superb condition.
