The Classic George B. Ayres Portrait of a Beardless Abraham Lincoln Taken June 30, 1860. The image, sepia toned by Ayres, is 7" X 9" is attractively presented in the original 2" wide gilt lined walnut frame, with the lengthy history of the negative, printed by Ayres serving as a seal on the reverse. Ayres purchased Alexander Hesler's original negatives form the Chicago photographer shortly after the Civil War. In 1881 he printed images from the original negatives, this being one of those images. In 1933 the original negatives were broken when being shipped through the U. S. Mail to Washington, D. C. Although we have not attempted to remove the image it is likely blind stamped on the bottom with Ayres logo. Image about perfect. Some old scotch tape applied to the rear of the frame indicating the image may, in fact, have been removed at some point. A very rare and historic Lincoln photograph.
