    Sioux Chief Young-Man-Afraid-Of-His-Horses: Silver Gelatin Print by D. F. Barry, Circa 1884. Studio portrait of the great Oglala Sioux Chief Young-Man-Afraid-of-His-Horses, shown facing the camera directly, holding a fan fashioned out of eagle feathers and a cane, dressed in a European-style waistcoat and frock coat with a kerchief tied around his neck. Photographer D. H. Barry has signed "Barry Photo" in white ink on the image. Barry was a gifted pioneer photographer who photographed many famous Native Americans in the Dakota Territory. He was known to his native subjects as "Icastinyanka Cikala Hanzi" or "The Little Shadow Catcher," due to his ability to capture their images onto paper. The image is houses in an oval shaped paper frame with Barry's studio embossed imprint on the lower right of mount, and Barry's blue studio label on the verso. Also on verso in pencil writing is, "Chief / Young Man Afraid/ of his Horses". Print has light cross-hatch impressions that are visible in raking light. 5.5" x 7.5".
