    Description

Robert E. Lee: Mounted Carbon Print Studio Portrait. 6" x 8.25" photograph affixed to original 7.5" x 10" mount (trimmed on sides). Taken in June 1870 at the Lexington, Virginia studio of Michael Miley, at the behest of sculptor Edward Valentine. The original portrait was an albumen photograph. This version is a much rarer, perhaps unique, carbon print. Miley was a pioneer in the development of this type of photographic print which was used in publications, often tipped in. Most collectors and dealers have never seen an original carbon print of Lee. Inscribed on verso: "Prepared by Dr. J. L. D. Armistead Professor English Agnes Scott College, Decatur, Georgia for Mr. W. S. Covington of Moultrie, Ga."
From the collection of Dr. Donald Hopkins.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
