    Description

Robert E. Lee: "Last Photograph" Printed in 1917. 10.25" x 13.25" silver print inscribed in the negative "Last Photograph of General Robert E. Lee. © Jake Fisher". It is actually based on a Miley photograph taken in 1868. Miley retouched the portrait and made one print shortly before Lee's death on October 12, 1870. He loaned the print to one of Lee's daughters and the glass negative was accidentally broken shortly thereafter. The print went missing until found in 1917 at Washington and Lee University. Judge Jake Fisher was able to borrow the print and make several copies for friends. A typewritten note, describing the history of this portrait, was attached to the back of the frame that housed it, and is included. The frame is no longer present.
From the collection of Dr. Donald Hopkins.
