Robert E. Lee: Large Colorized Bendann Photograph After Brady. 10.5" x 14.5" portrait of Lee seated in a library, signed "Bendann" in the lower right corner. This was based on one of Mathew Brady's classic "back door" portraits taken at Lee's home in Richmond shortly after the surrender at Appomattox. It was the last time Lee posed in his Confederate uniform complete with insignia. David and Daniel Bendann of Baltimore designed and patented a method of altering backdrops to suit an artist's taste. This portrait mounted on board apparently utilizes this method, substituting the doorway and brick wall with a library setting. David Bendann relinquished the photography business to his brother to pursue his career as an artist. He was likely the artist who colorized this photo enlargement. Painting over photographs was a common practice at this time.
From the collection of Dr. Donald Hopkins.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
