    Description

Rare Photograph Of John Dillinger's Mother. In 1903 the prim young Edwardian lady in this 6" x 8" studio portrait gave birth to a son who would grow up to terrorize the Midwest during the depths of the Great Depression. John Dillinger's very name continues to evoke images of crime, violent bank robberies, and desperate jail breaks. The image offered here may very well be the only one of Dillinger's mother in private hands. A bold verso inscription reads, "Mary Ellen (Molly) Lancaster Mrs John W Dillinger Grandmother Dillinger". Worn mat edges with moderate stains. The photograph, however, is clean and retains good contrasts.
