    Description

Quanah Parker Cabinet Card, Circa 1890s. Measuring 4.25" x 6.5", this well-known image of the famed Comanche leader shows Quanah chest-up, his hair is in braids that are wrapped in beaver fur, white polka-dotted scarf, and dangling silver earrings. Photographed by Irwin and Mankins of Chickasha and Duncan, Indian Territory, the edges of the card are beautifully serrated. An exceptional image in near mint condition.

Quanah Parker (circa 1845-1911) was the son of Peta Nocona, a prominent Comanche war chief, and Cynthia Ann Parker, a white captive who had been living with the Comanche since her capture at the age of nine on May 19, 1836. Their camp was attacked by Texas Rangers in 1861 and Cynthia Ann and her young daughter fled on horseback. She was captured by the Rangers and reunited with her white relations. However, she was never reconciled to the loss of her Comanche family and died unhappily sometime around 1870. Quanah resisted white encroachment until his defeat at the Battle of Adobe Walls in June, 1874, but he is best known for the leadership of his people following their settlement on the Comanche-Kiowa Reservation in Oklahoma in 1875.
