Oval Albumen Civil War Period Portrait of Lt. Hiram Upson, 7th Connecticut Vol. Inf., Killed at James Island, S.C. 5 1/2" X 7 1/2". In original period walnut frame with unusual and original embossed paperboard mat. Period ink script ID on verso "Capt. Hiram Upson (although he apparently only achieved the rank of Lt. prior to his death). Additional information accompanying the image, from the family, states that the ID was written by Sarah Upson, Hiram's mother. Upson is seated wearing single breasted frock coat with shoulder straps and small exterior pocket. Sword belt and sash, with M1850 foot officer's sword cradled in his arm. Fine quality, perfect condition. Upson originally enlisted in the 2nd Conn. Inf. on 5/7/61, achieving the rank of Corporal and participating in the 1st Battle of Bull Run. Upson mustered out 8/7/61. He then enlisted in the 7th Conn. on 9/9/61, was wounded at James Island, S. C. on 6/16/62, and died of his wounds 6/18/62. Accompanied by much additional research and family information. Nice image with great period ID and history.
