    More Information:

General Joseph Lane (1801-1881) ordered his Federal troops, which included Captain Samuel Walker's Mounted Rifles, to attack Mexican forces in Huamantla, Mexico, in October 1847. That victory came at the high price of Walker's life. Walker erred in getting too far ahead of Lane's main force. Throughout the Mexican War, Lane enjoyed working with Texas troops, employing them at every opportunity. He particularly enjoyed working with Jack Hays, who felt the same toward the general.
