Jesse Banfield (1877-1946). Original Photograph Believed to Be of His Niece, Muriel. Measures approximately 7.5" x 9". Adhered to backing. Signed at bottom right corner in pencil. Adhesive residue at verso. Very good.Banfield was a member of the Oakland salon pictorial movement. He exhibited in various salons between 1910 and 1917, including the Seventh American Photographic Salon at the John Herron Art Institute; the Ninth American Photographic Salon at the Art Institute of Chicago; and the International Exhibition of the London Salon of Photography, Galleries of the Royal Society. His work was also reproduced in "Architecture & Landscape Gardening of the Exposition," Paul Elder and Co., San Francisco, 1915. He frequently used a soft focus "verito lens" (the same kind used by Ansel Adams until 1929). This photograph is from a collection of originals believed to have been printed by the photographer himself for inclusion in a custom album he presented to his niece, Muriel. The gift inscription from the album reads, "To my niece Muriel / from / Jess."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.View More Testimonials
