The Tombstone and Arizona Territory Collection

Important Large Autographed Photo of Sheriff and Fire Chief David Scannell. Old card under photo reads: "David Scannell. Born in N. Y. City 1820. Served in Mexican War. Sheriff of San Francisco 1856, Vigilante Days when Cora and Casey were hung. Chief of Fire Department of San Francisco for 30 years. Died 1893, 73 yrs. Presented to Tombstone Fire Department 1881." Photo in great condition, 10" x 16", with what appears to be original mat. Nicely framed to 18" x 23.5".

Why would a prominent San Franciscoan have had his picture in a Tombstone, Arizona firehouse? The boomtown city grew quickly to several thousand people as the silver mines offered a chance for people to make their fortune. The construction of the city to accommodate this huge influx was less than ideal and on June 22, 1881 a fire destroyed half of the new town's business district. David Scannell, less than a week later, offered the town a "first rate...and complete for you" hook and ladder truck at a 90 percent discount to what the city of San Francisco paid. A letter from the Office Board of Fire Commissioners was printed in the July 3rd edition of The Daily Nugget, along with the minutes of the meeting wherein the Rescue Hook and Ladder Company No. 1 convened and approved this acquisition. (A crude photocopy of this article is included with the lot). A great relic that likely hung in one, if not both firehouses in Tombstone, and was witness to the firehouse commotion during the even larger fire in 1882.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
