Images (5) of African-American Sideshow Performers.
    Five images of various sizes
    No place, circa early 1900s

A group of images of performers from classic sideshow attractions. These shows were associated with circuses or fairs, and often featured acts with "human oddities". Included are two images of Princess Wee-Wee, Betty Williams, Kiko and Sulu, and The Leopard Family, who are only identified on verso as "Des Moines at the fair colored people with white spots on their body and white hair".

Princess Wee-Wee, born Harriet Elizabeth Thompson, was approximately 21-23 years old in these photographs, and was only 17 inches tall. Originally from Baltimore, she toured with numerous shows including Coney Island's Dreamland, and even performed for President Calvin Coolidge at the White House. Betty Williams, real name Lillie B. Williams, was born in 1932 with two additional arms and two additional legs. She toured for a period as part of Ripley's "Believe-It-Or-Not" Odditorium. Kiko and Sulu were a duo known as the "Pinheads from Zanzibar", and performed as an act with the combined Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey shows. The Leopard Family (or the Davis Family) had a form of piebaldism, where parts of their skin and hair were devoid of melanocytes.

Condition: There is light toning and slight wear to some of the images. Overall, they are in good condition.
