Historic Photograph of Andrew Carnegie at Thomas A. Edison's Sound Studio in the Bronx. 10" x 8", black and white. In an effort to capture the voices and visages of some of the most important figures of the "Gilded Age", Thomas A. Edison invited Andrew Carnegie, among others, to his Bronx studio to be filmed and recorded using his Kinetophone device. Records indicate that Carnegie was filmed and recorded on January 20, 1914. The sound recording of Carnegie reading from his Gospel of Wealth was re-discovered in the 1980s, but Edison's film of that important event was lost in a March, 1914 fire at the studio. This photograph depicting the venerable philanthropist seated in the parlor of Edison's studio bears a contemporary caption at the lower right corner written in an unknown hand "At the Edison Studio/ January 20, 1914". This important photograph may well be the only surviving visual record of that historic event. The photograph is just slightly faded and there are mounting remnants on the verso, the result of the photograph being removed from an album.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
